Google’s Gay Agenda

June 18th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in gay rights, technology

Overnight Google has added a new feature to their site, rainbow stripes down the side of the page when you search for the keywords “gay”, “lesbian”, “bisexual” or “transgender”.

Google's Gay Agenda

This is possibly Google’s way to show support for the new legislation in California that allows same-sex couples to get married.  However, I can’t find anything on their official blog that mentions the rainbow strips or the reason for them.

The religious right and other bigots are already out in force protesting this new addition to the Google site.

Duncan Riley has written a blog post called The Religious Right is Going to Boycott Google in 3..2..1 on his blog  The Inquistir.  This post was also displayed on Friend Feed.  In both places commenters have left blatant anti-gay comments.  When Duncan blocked them on Friend Feed, they headed over to his blog to abuse not only Google but Duncan as well.

There are also the commenters who are trying not appear homophobic by saying that Google showing the rainbow stripes really makes gay people feel marginalised, but then go on to say that perhaps gay people like it that way.  You know, I think society as a whole is doing a pretty damn good job of doing marginalising gay people without Google’s ‘help’.  Google putting up some rainbow stripes does not increase this feeling of marginalisation for the gay community.   You have to wonder if the same people also get equally upset when Google has a special logo for Black History Month and Martin Luther King’s Anniversary?  Or is only homophobia cool these days since society generally frowns on expressions of racism?

Thank you Google for braving the backlash of the religious right and other intolerant members of society by proudly showing your support of gay people everywhere.  I guess the religious right will now have to go and make friends with Yahoo.

If you do want to brave the discussion going on on Friend Feed, Duncan’s feed can be found here.   Also while you are there, you can look me up as well.

Unusual Search Results

March 7th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in life

I love looking at the things people search on that brings them to my blog.  One phrase that keeps turning up time and time again is “pap smear horror stories” which is related to this post.  Since it keeps turning up every couple of days, I thought I must rate fairly highly on this keyword search.  So I plugged the phrase into Google and starting looking for my entry. I went past the post “Signs that your husband might be gay” and fan fiction story about”pregnant Vampire Bella” (whoever she might be), stumbled across Kelley’s post about the douche bag on page 28 and kept on going.  I gave up at page 71.

I then headed over to Yahoo and did the same thing.  For reasons which I do not want to know there are a lot of vampire sites with the phrase pap smear in them. I also did not need to know about the Harry Potter fan fiction where all the girls needed a pap smear and the boys needed a sperm count.  My life would have been just fine without that image in my head.  I gave up looking at page 50 and began looking for a good stiff drink.

I have no idea how people are finding their way to my blog based on that keyword search.  They must spend hours going through all those search results to finally come to my site.  I just hope it was worth it.
