Have nuns taken up the blogging habit?

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - JULY 08: A group of Ameri...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

I am being stalked by nuns.  It is Catholic World Youth Day in Sydney next week and the Pope will be coming to town, thus Sydney is starting to fill up with Catholic pilgrims from around the world including lots of nuns.  In a city where it is rare to see a nun to now seeing them everywhere is very strange.  It feels like I have stepped into a parallel Catholic world.  But there is one group of nuns who I swear are stalking me.  They are a group of young nuns from Tennessee who got on my bus the other morning to travel into the City.  We said hello and chatted briefly about Catholic World Youth Day.  Now, I keep seeing them everywhere - in a city full of nuns.  It is starting to freak me out and I think I am being to develop a touch of cloisterphobia.

Seeing all these young nuns around town got me wondering about whether these nuns are blogging about their lives and in particular if we have any blogger nuns attending World Youth Day.

A quick search has revealed the blog and twitter of Sister Julie who writes A Nun’s Life where she talks about what it is like to be a nun and runs a forum for those interested in taking up the vocation.  It is an absolutely fascinating read.  Did you know that there is a difference between a nun and a sister?

A young Aussie nun Sister Sarah blogs over at The Nun Thing where she has a fantastic post entitled Sometimes it is embarassing to be Catholic where she, like the rest of the citizens of Sydney, questions the logic of the annoyance law in place for WYD. I am glad to see Catholics feel the same way that the rest of do about this idiotic law.

This is what I love about blogging, the fact that so many people from so many walks of life take part in it.  A simple Google search can uncover blogs that let you see the world from someone else’s point of view and in doing so can change the way you view others.

Blogging Taboos - What won’t you blog about?

June 11th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in blogs

Taboo Reading my way through the blogosphere I am constantly amazed by what people will blog about. They happily blog about topics that I would not feel comfortable sharing or topics that I would love to blog about but know that it is perhaps not the wisest thing for me to do.

Crystal from Boobs, Injuries & Dr. Pepper has blogged about being institutionalised at mental hospital after trying to kill herself and is now blogging about the events in her life that lead her to suicide attempt. It is raw, real and is an amazing read about what one person can endure. She has received many abusive comments on her blog, but still she continues on telling her story. I know that I would not be able to share something so personal and painful and I admire her strength to be able to do so.

Jamie from Transman Diaries is blogging his journey transitioning from a woman to a man. Again, this is another very personal subject and Jamie shares not only his first attempt to inject testosterone but also his experiences working in law firm where he was hired as a woman. I know Jamie is blogging because he wants to bring awareness and a personal face to the transgender community, but he is also taking a great risk sharing his life online and you can’t help but admire that.

The one thing I refuse to blog about is my work. I may mention little odd incidents that happen in the office like trying to track down who was leaving toilet paper on the bathroom floor, but I will not blog about workplace relationships or more serious things that go on in the office. Whilst I do blog under an assumed name, my blog is clearly displayed on my Facebook profile and I do have people from work friended. Workmates are also following me on Twitter and Plurk. Sometimes it drives me insane that I have this self-imposed restricition about blogging about work because my work can provide such fabulous blog fodder, but I don’t want to follow Dooce and get fired because what I have said about my work on my blog.

So what are your blogging taboos? What topics do you refuse to blog about? If you are a niche blogger or don’t write a blog what topics do you not share online? Although if you do have a niche blog and there are some things in niche that you don’t blog about, I would be interested in hearing what they are.

The Ultimate Blog Party

March 7th, 2008 | 9 Comments | Posted in blogging, life, social networking

Ultimate Blog Party 2008I stumbled across this today and thought, ‘why the hell not’. It is for women only (sorry guys) and despite being advertised on a mommy blog with a strong Christian bend to it, it is supposed to be for all female bloggers regardless of religious affiliation or parental status, but you do need to keep your “party post” family friendly. I am not sure how a childless agnostic dyke is going to go amongst this crowd, but what the hell, I am always up for some free traffic and some more fabulous readers like your good selves.

Click on the picture next to this post and come along and join the party!

Now to decide what to serve at this shindig and I guess I am going to have to tidy up this place before everyone comes around.

Views from an office window

March 4th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in blogs, life

I am a bit stuck for what to write about today, but since I signed up to NaBloMoPo I have to post something.  So in keeping with the theme of lists, here is a list of things I can see from my office window;

1. Pigeons, and lots of them, walking around in the sunshine

2. A group of people sitting in a circle on the grass eating lunch

3. A garbage bin that is so full that rubbish has flowed onto the ground around it

4. An old looking bike leaning against a sign (I’m surprised no one has stolen it)

5.  A toddler making a quick getaway from his mother who is carrying his younger sibling

6. People sitting on the benches, smoking.

Not really that much going on outside my window.

In other unrelated news, the February listings have come out for Top 100 Australian Women’s Blogs.  I have fallen from 76 to 79.  I really need to get out there and start promoting my blog.

Lesbian Geek

March 2nd, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in blogs, gadgets, lesbian, life, queer culture, technology, television

Daphne and VelmaI have found my newest favourite site, Lesbian Geek. It is about all things geeky like rpgs, sci-fi tv shows and gadgets with a lesbian spin on it. I am so excited. It is like everything I love on one website. I am in love.

I have also stumbled across where all the lesbian bloggers are hanging out. Unfortunately, they all appear to be American, but I won’t hold that against them. Somewhere there has to be Aussie lesbian bloggers, right? It may take me a while, but I will find them. In the meantime, I am having a great Sunday morning reading through all my new found lesbian blogs. Quite a few of them have made it onto my Google reader. I am really going to have to find more hours in the day to read all the blogs I want to read and start actually commenting on them.
