Would you survive in a post-apocalyptic world?
Suspend your disbelief for a while and imagine a post-apocalyptic world in which there is no oil and very little to no electricity. Cars are simply hunks of metal littering the landscape. The Internet is a thing of the past as there is not enough electricity to power computers. Most of society is now unemployed. You don’t eat unless you grow the food yourself. Gradually people start coming together to form communities to help each other eke out a living.
What skills would you be able to offer this community? Can you can vegetables? Make candles? Wield a scythe? Build furniture? Do you know how to milk a cow? Weave cloth and make clothing? Can you shear a sheep and spin wool? Could you pluck a chicken or dismember a cow? I can see butchers being extremely valuable members of society. So, what skills do you possess that would make you an asset to society?
Drawing on my dim knowledge of being a Girl Guide, I can built a great campfire and cook food providing that my community is happy living on Apricot Chicken with rice and damper. I am pretty good with first aid and have basic medical knowledge, but really you would only come to me if all the doctors had been wiped out. I would like to think I am good at growing food and that my failed attempts are only due to Caleb peeing on the plants and Rory eating what little vegies grew.
So, would you become a valued member of this post-apocalyptic world or would you be cast out to the wilderness to die?
