Starting weight training
I have been talking about doing some weight training for a while now after watching Lelak lift heavy things night after night. I have been doing a lot of talking and absolutely no doing. So, last night, Lelak dropped a not so subtle hint that it was time to do what I have been saying I would, by leaving some dumbbells in the living room. I could have left them there, but I thought, what the heck, let’s start getting into shape.
I followed this exercise plan for an upper body weight workout for women with my puny 2kg weights. I did two sets of 10 reps and came through it not too shabby. I feared, thanks to my fibro, that I was going to be in a world of pain today, but was pleasantly surprised that all I had was some general muscle soreness. I need to find some lower body stuff to get my butt and thighs all toned up or else my top half is going to look gorgeous whilst my bottom half will be all flabby. My aim is to do weights every second day and to keep up my dog walking every day. Hopefully, this will put me on the path to looking and feeling fit and healthy.

Good going!!
One beauty of lower-body training is that your upper half acts as the weight being lifted for the first few stages. One of the best tips I got was that when doing squats, to keep my weight forward on my toes, not my heels. Saves stress on the knees.

Naomi, I certainly have a lot of upper body weight to work out my lower body.
Really not looking forward to doing squats though, I hate squats.

Yay! Weight training is fun because you can make really measured progress at it. You can even gain benefit from only working out 2x/week, so don’t feel that you have to do every other day– I always have my best workouts after 3 days off anyway! And watch your form– getting a book that shows you proper form for each exercise can be crucial- the benefits are two-fold– you won’t hurt yourself, and you’ll get the maximum benefit from the workout– its so easy to cheat in ways you don’t even realize.
Go Riayn!

Fran, I have Lelak keeping an eye on my form and correcting me when I stuff up (which is quite a bit at the moment). Maybe doing weights every other day is a bit ambitious, but I will attempt to work up to that.
