Shopping Online

May 21st, 2008 Posted in life

At the moment the Australian dollar is worth 96 US cents.  This is the highest the dollar has been in over 25 years.  Thus whilst the good times last, I want to buy some geek stuff that normally I would not be able to afford.   I headed over to ThinkGeek which has some of the coolest geek gear ever, selected a very appropriate shirt for my job and then checked out the shipping charge to Australia.  Cost of shirt $15.  Cost of shipping $26.  I don’t think so.  Thinkgeek, you guys really need to renegotiate your shipping contract, cause that price is bloody outrageous.

So, my beloved geeky friends, where can I buy some cool geek shirts to wear to work at a reasonable price (both cost and shipping wise)?   I need to update my wardrobe as my current crop of t-shirts have really seen better days.

It shits you doesn’t it! We are so deprived of spiffy stuff here, but so many OS sites/stores either don’t ship here or what to charge you a fortune.

A site last week wanted to charge me $36 to post some shoelaces o.O

Threadless has some cool shirts, and their shipping is very reasonable.

Veer.com is even worse: they won’t ship their wonderfully typographical geeky t-shirts and merchandise outside North America. Apparently it’s all too complicated so they’d rather not.

Closer to home try Remo’s General Store at remo.com.au. Huge range of great t-shirt designs, including some geeky ones, and now you can design your own as well. So something like the one you found could be developed in a flash.

Now that just stinks, but I can help you out if you want to. If you tell me what you want, I can shop for them here and then send them to you? I am on the west coast of America in Oregon and the price can’t be too bad for me to ship to you if you had a budget in mind? I have good taste, you can ask Dory on she who blogs, she will vouch for me, she knows me, though will she admit it? :-)

Leigh: It does totally bite how American centric large parts of the internet is these days, especially when it comes to online shopping.

Thorn: Thanks for the recommendation of Remo. I will have to go and check them out. Always happy to support Australian companies online.

Becca: Thanks so much for your offer. If I find a t-shirt that I must own, I will definitely get in contact with you.

I was whinging telling my daughter this just last night.
We’d love to install more solar powered lights/ products/solar panels but the range available and the price in Oz is totally blah.
USA have gazillions of great, cheap products available but the shipping alone would wipe out the national debt of a small country (hello Wayne Swan!).

Jayne: It is ridiculous how much solar panels cost in this country. I would love to have my hot water heated by solar energy, but it would cost a pretty penny to get everything converted. We have so much sunshine in Australia that you would think the governments would be pushing us to make use of it, but then I guess that doesn’t bring the money in like the coal power stations do.
