R2-D2 Projector
I first saw Star Wars when I was about five, but I don’t have any memories of my first ever viewing. I do remember in 1981 when I was six, our neighbours got not only a video player but a surround sound system which was quite a big deal back then. To show it off they played the opening scene of Star Wars and I completely geeked out. To me it was one of the most amazing things I had ever seen or heard. When we got our first video recorder a couple of months later, the first thing I taped was Star Wars which was showing as part of our local TV stations’ telethon. I still have that original tape. By the time Return of the Jedi was released when I was nine, I was a full blown Star Wars geek. I counted down the days until the movie premiered and I had Return of the Jedi bedsheets. I also really wanted a model of the Millennium Falcon, but I never got one - and actually, I still don’t have one. When I had reached 12, I had seen all three films 125 times each - I stopped counting at that time, but I imagine that now I am pushing 200.
I know I have gone on a bit about my Star Wars obsession, but I want you to understand my massive geekgasm when I saw the R2-D2 projector. Not only does it play DVDs and other video formats, but you can plug in an XBox or computer and play games on the massive screen. Plus it has a iPod docking station and can play music and videos off a USB memory stick. It also comes with a very cool looking Millennium Falcon remote control. But what is totally sells this projector is that the R2-D2 unit is totally functional, it can be moved around the room and it beeps away at you in true R2-D2 fashion. Have a look at this video for all the very cool features of this projector.
It is extremely unlikely I would ever get my hands on this projector as it costs a cool US$3,000 and is not available in Australia. But if I ever did, the first thing I would play would be the Princess Leia message. If you don’t know this scene, click on the link;
“Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you are my only hope”
*look, look, put disk in the R2 unit*
How cool would that look beaming out of your very own R2 unit. Almost as cool as seeing the opening of Star Wars on the huge IMAX screen and trust me, that is seriously cool.
