Am I A Real Mum Now?

June 5th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in gay rights, lesbian

Gay FamiliesYesterday the NSW Parliament passed the Miscellaneous Acts Amendment (Same Sex Relationships) Bill. This bill means that the non-biological lesbian parent now has the same rights as the biological mother including her name on the birth certificate. Penny Sharpe MLC made a fantastic speech to Parliament which you can read on her website when this Bill was up for debate.

My friend M is the non-biological parent of a gorgeous 6 month old girl, Zoe. She emailed me today with this news as she had some doubts that this was now law. She ended her email with the phrase “Am I a real mum now?”. It broke my heart. She may have been joking as I am sure she considers herself Zoe’s real mum and I know her partner F definitely does. However, it made me think of all those non-biological parents out there who deep down may not believe that they are the real parents of their children - and my heart broke.

In my view, if you take care of a child, tuck them into bed and read them stories at night, take care of them when they sick and share their ups and downs - then you are their real parent. It doesn’t matter if you are their biological parent, adoptive parent, step-parent, non-biological parent, foster parent or caregiver, you are that child’s real parent. DNA does not make you the parent of a child. Ask a child who their parents are and they will point to the people who love and care for them, they don’t care whose egg or sperm was donated to bring them into this world. It is about time that the laws of this country realises this too.

So, to all the non-biological lesbian mothers out there, including M, congratulations! Finally the law recognises something all the rest of us have always known, you are your children’s real mother too.

Celebrity Lesbian Tendencies

May 29th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in lesbian, life

Tomboy lesbianToday’s hot topic around the water cooler was the news story that Lindsay Lohan’s father says that she is a lesbian. As the token lesbian in the office I am often amused at the conversations that occur when the story that a celebrity is gay is discussed. This was the conversation that took place…

D: Did you guys see the news story that Lindsay Lohan is gay?

Me: Oh god, we don’t want her, take her back!

A looks visibly shocked. I don’t think he realised I was gay.

D: Yeah, her dad says that she is a lezzo.

Everyone looks at me because D uttered the word “lezzo” (which incidentally I hate).

D: Umm… not that there is anything wrong with that. (yes, she really did say that)

F: The article says that she has lesbian tendencies.

If there is a phrase I hate it is “has lesbian tendencies”. As soon as I hear that I am taken back to the 60s when homosexuality was believed to be a psychological disorder and homosexuals were institutionalised. I can see the words “has lesbian tendencies” written on women’s medical records. I really wish news articles would stop using it.

The conversation then moved on to Lindsay Lohan’s replica of Marilyn Monroe’s final photoshoot dubbed, “The Last Sitting”. This meant that everyone could comment on how trashy it was and continuing bitching without feeling uncomfortable discussing celebrities possibly being gay in front of the lesbian. It also allowed me to bring out my rant about how if Marilyn Monroe was an emerging starlet today the tabloid magazines would write articles on how fat she was. Also, it is just plain embarrassing to see size 0 actresses trying to replica her famous photos. Those girls think that curves are a gym network. Today there are extremely few actresses that have the sexy curves that Marilyn had.

Now if Lindsay really is in a lesbian relationship then good for her. I hope her girlfriend teaches her about self-respect and dignity. But honestly, I think it is all a ploy to get some publicity. As Paris Hilton knows there is nothing like kissing a couple of girls to get your face splashed across the pages of magazines for weeks. However, it looks like Lindsay has gone one better and has done an Ellen by announcing her intention to marry her girlfriend. It really is like watching a car wreck.

Banning the word lesbian

May 3rd, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in lesbian

The EU is known for getting a little rigid on who can legally use words to describe products. The first product to feel its wrath was champagne.  If it was not made in the Champagne region of France then it could no longer be called champagne, instead it was demoted to “sparkling wine”.

Now it seems if you were not born of the Greek island of Lesbos, you can not be called a lesbian. Now I can understand the people of Lesbos getting their nose a little out of joint by all these dykes running around the place calling themselves lesbians, but do they really think that going to court about this is going to get people to stop calling gay women lesbians?

Let’s say for a moment, that they do win their court case and only people born on Lesbos can be called lesbians. What do we call gay women? I personally love the word dyke, in fact I much prefer it to the word lesbian. Lesbian to me sounds kinda clinical. However, if the word dyke then becomes the accepted word for lesbian, I imagine we will have the Dutch in court saying that if someone is not a long wall or bank built in the Netherlands to keep out the sea then they can not be legally called a dyke.

So what should be the new term for gay women? I can’t imagine carpet munchers would go down well in polite company, although the evil side of me would love to see one of those uppity news readers or homophobic politicians have to use the term on air. Let’s hear what you think we should be called.
