Blogging From The Living Room

March 10th, 2008 | 11 Comments | Posted in gadgets, life, technology

Dell laptopI am blogging from my brand new laptop whilst sitting on the couch. It is so wonderful not to be stuck in the computer room when I want to be online. I have upgraded from a 5 year old desktop with 384MB of RAM with a 40G hard drive to a new laptop with 4G of RAM and 250G hard drive. It is a huge change.

I have installed Firefox and Thunderbird so that I don’t have to use any Microsoft products when I am surfing the web and using email.

Any suggestions of must have programs that I should install? I have 250G to fill so I am not going to run out of space any time soon.

Lesbian Geek

March 2nd, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in blogs, gadgets, lesbian, life, queer culture, technology, television

Daphne and VelmaI have found my newest favourite site, Lesbian Geek. It is about all things geeky like rpgs, sci-fi tv shows and gadgets with a lesbian spin on it. I am so excited. It is like everything I love on one website. I am in love.

I have also stumbled across where all the lesbian bloggers are hanging out. Unfortunately, they all appear to be American, but I won’t hold that against them. Somewhere there has to be Aussie lesbian bloggers, right? It may take me a while, but I will find them. In the meantime, I am having a great Sunday morning reading through all my new found lesbian blogs. Quite a few of them have made it onto my Google reader. I am really going to have to find more hours in the day to read all the blogs I want to read and start actually commenting on them.

Geekosphere

November 20th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in gadgets

Wired is running a competition about the nerdiest desk ornament which was inspired by the author seeing his workmate’s Erlenmeyer flask filled with multisided gaming dice.
I must admit that I am in awe of this desk ornament. As a scientist and gamer, this is an object that I want to sneak into Wired office and steal.

It got me thinking about my current geekosphere which, I must lament, does not exist. I have nothing even remotely geeky on my desk unless you count my headset and microphone combo that I use to conduct Skype calls with our international offices.

One of my fellow co-worker has a USB missile launcher (like the one above) which he uses to ‘kill’ anyone who annoys him and three juggling balls which inevitably always end up spread over the office.

In my last corporate job, I had Dogma’s Buddy Christ and a devil duck sitting on top of my monitor. I saw it as a representation of the struggle between good and evil, but my co-workers who knew nothing about Dogma thought I had become a born again Christian and started treating me very strangely. Therefore, I need to choose what to decorate my current geekosphere with very carefully. Suggestions will be gladly accepted. Feel free to post photos of your geekosphere or those of your co-workers that you admire or fear.

The new direction of Zune

November 6th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in advertising, gadgets, technology

Zune have released their brand new ad campaign with the tag line “You make it you”. As Jack Oh, the Zune senior advertising manager, Microsoft, Bear Creek, Wash says, “I could scroll through your Zune and have an idea of who you are as person.” Yes Jack, it tells you that they are gullible. Unless Zune have vastly improved their MP3 player, it is not as Microsoft would like to believe, the only alternative to iPod. There are many alternatives to the iPod that work far better than Zune and probably have a cheaper price tag too.
Still it is not a bad ad as far as ads go, although the giant pink dancing cats and rabbits kinda freak me out.
