Reading my way through the blogosphere I am constantly amazed by what people will blog about. They happily blog about topics that I would not feel comfortable sharing or topics that I would love to blog about but know that it is perhaps not the wisest thing for me to do.
Crystal from Boobs, Injuries & Dr. Pepper has blogged about being institutionalised at mental hospital after trying to kill herself and is now blogging about the events in her life that lead her to suicide attempt. It is raw, real and is an amazing read about what one person can endure. She has received many abusive comments on her blog, but still she continues on telling her story. I know that I would not be able to share something so personal and painful and I admire her strength to be able to do so.
Jamie from Transman Diaries is blogging his journey transitioning from a woman to a man. Again, this is another very personal subject and Jamie shares not only his first attempt to inject testosterone but also his experiences working in law firm where he was hired as a woman. I know Jamie is blogging because he wants to bring awareness and a personal face to the transgender community, but he is also taking a great risk sharing his life online and you can’t help but admire that.
The one thing I refuse to blog about is my work. I may mention little odd incidents that happen in the office like trying to track down who was leaving toilet paper on the bathroom floor, but I will not blog about workplace relationships or more serious things that go on in the office. Whilst I do blog under an assumed name, my blog is clearly displayed on my Facebook profile and I do have people from work friended. Workmates are also following me on Twitter and Plurk. Sometimes it drives me insane that I have this self-imposed restricition about blogging about work because my work can provide such fabulous blog fodder, but I don’t want to follow Dooce and get fired because what I have said about my work on my blog.
So what are your blogging taboos? What topics do you refuse to blog about? If you are a niche blogger or don’t write a blog what topics do you not share online? Although if you do have a niche blog and there are some things in niche that you don’t blog about, I would be interested in hearing what they are.
