Chilled Out

February 24th, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in life

I have just spent the better part of the morning reading. In fact, I read a whole book (Running with Scissors, if anyone is interested). It has been months since I have just plopped down on the couch and read a book cover to cover. Okay, so I did do two loads of laundry whilst reading, but still, except for getting up to put the clothes on the line, I have remained on the couch and just read. I am feeling amazingly chilled out which is a feeling I haven’t experienced for quite some time. Obviously, I need to take a time out from life more often.

I still need to do some grocery shopping, iron my work shirts and take the dogs for a walk, but if I don’t get those done life won’t stop. I think I am have been over planning my life recently in order to feel in control. Everything must happen at a set time or else I go into a panic. That is not a great way to live. Saying to hell with it and just chilling out with a good book makes me feel far better than accomplishing a whole list of tasks. Sure being organised and getting things done is good, but so is just living in the moment. I just need to find a healthy balance between the two.

Saturday

I spent the day with my parents yesterday but as fate would have it we didn’t have time to go shopping, so I still have some extra time to think about something frivolous to buy.  This is good because, despite your excellent suggestions, I still have no idea what I want to buy.  We had brunch at Circular Quay and then headed to the Powerhouse Museum.  I definitely need to go back there as we only had an hour to spend there and we saw barely anything.  Then we went off to The Rocks to my favourite place, The Waterfront Restaurant where I indulged in Lobster Morney.  It was so good.  Then I headed home as Lelak had returned from her biking adventure.  Then last night, we watched our WNBL team the Sydney Flames thrash the Adelaide Lightning in the semi-finals which means we go straight into the grand final in two weeks time.   All around it was a very good day.

Today I have to do the household chores which is not an exciting prospect.

Frivolous Spending

February 22nd, 2008 | 8 Comments | Posted in life

It is my birthday in about a week and a half and my parents are going to be in town this weekend.  My Nanna has sent down with them $200 which I have been ordered to spend on something “frivolous” for myself.  My habit of pocketing my birthday money and spending it on everyday living expenses is well known and apparently, according to my Nan, has to stop.

The problem is there is nothing I want.  I have no idea what to spend the money on.  However, my mother is taking me out shopping tomorrow to ensure that I do spend it, so I need to buy something.  I thought maybe some DVDs, I had already planned to buy Stardust and wouldn’t mind having Season 3 of House either.  Is that frivolous enough or should I lash out and buy something that normally I would never buy?  Although what that thing is I have no idea.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  I have until 10am tomorrow morning to come with something.

Reality TV Addiction

February 21st, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in life

I used to so proudly announce to all who listened that I never watch reality TV.  I had only seen one season of Survivor (the one set in Australia) and had never seen Big Brother, Australian Idol or any of the other reality TV shows that dominate our airways these days.  I used to condemn it as a dumbing down of the TV medium and that it pushed off the airwaves those shows that were actually well-written (Firefly, I still mourn your disappearance from my TV).

That is until I sat down and watched the first episode of this season’s Biggest Loser.  I have to shamefully admit that I am addicted to this show that my girlfriend loves to call “the fat people whining show”.  I must agree with her, a lot of the show is full of people breaking down and crying and complaining that exercising is too difficult, but I love it just the same.  I have strong, passionate feelings about the contestants from being their biggest cheerleader to hating them on sight.  I have dilemmas about who my favourite trainer is - Michelle started off so well but has now become a petty bitch, whilst Shannon who I found kinda annoying has grown on me.  I am just so wrapped up in this show that it has reached the level of being kinda embarassing.

However, I have discovered the appeal of reality TV. It has the ability of making you feel a part of something, like you are going on a journey with these people and in a way you are.  Yes, it is at times completely unrealistic and overdramatised - but really that just give you a great opportunity to mock them - and who doesn’t love to mock reality TV.

I think I have also got my girlfriend hooked on the Biggest Loser, although she will never admit it.  The one night last week, I was out, I asked her to tape it.  She did - and I got SMS updates on the big events that occurred which means that she chose to watch it as well.

Appointment Made

February 20th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in life

RPA just called me back and I now have an appointment for April 2nd.  Nowhere near the waiting time I was expecting.  I can’t tell you how much I don’t want to go to this appointment.
